Life-in-Dialogue, It’s Possible, It’s Happening!

The Silsilah Forum Davao convened at Samson Technical Institute, Davao City on January 22, 2011.
The annual gathering of alumni and friends aimed at sharing of concrete experiences in living out life-in-dialogue; celebrating the first year anniversary of Silsilah Forum of Davao Center; launching of the song: “Life-in-Dialogue, It’s Possible! It’s Happening!” and strengthening and deepening of commitment to the spirituality of Silsilah.
The gathering started with an interfaith prayer. Pastors, Priests & Archbishop, Imams and Ustadz with their members, foster parents, gurus, catechists and Fr. Sebastiano D’ Ambra, the founder of Silsilah, were present.
Aleem Mahmod Adilao shared about how Muslim communities perceived the Bishop Ulama Conference (BUC) program before, until they began to appreciate it and live with it as they believe that all religions envisioned for peace. The highlights of the SFD’s programs and activities for the year 2010 were shared to the participants through short video presentation.
Archbishop Fernando Capalla quoted, “Only beauty can save the world”, for beauty has the element of orderliness, integrity, wholesomeness. He added that Beauty builds friendship; friendship builds family; and family builds community. Towards this stage, we have to be together in dialogue.
The launching of the song composed by Fr. Hermes Larry B. Sabud, SM, “Life in Dialogue, It’s Possible, It’s Happening!” followed. The song was inspired by the Spirituality of SILSILAH which he composed during the Renewal of Commitment in Zamboanga last December 2010.
Meanwhile, Fr. Amado Picx Picardal,CSsR who once attended one of the Silsilah’s summer courses gave an Input on Life in Dialogue, It’s Possible, It’s Happening. Fr. Picx expressed that in order to continue making the dialogue happen, commitment is necessary to sustain the spirit of dialogue.
The participants had their chance to share their respective ideas in a smaller group; summarized their sharing into one word and shared them to the bigger group.
Fr. D’Ambra pointed out the Silsilah’s present state and its possibility to be present in many places even be heard over Radio stations by February 2011. He said that working for peace has earned a lot of criticisms, priests were criticized, even Pope. But we need to give signs of hope to the people.
The gathering, indeed, was a real manifestation of living out life-in-dialogue.

Ito ang araw na ginawa ng Panginoon. Tayo’y magsaya at magalak… (Ps 118:24)
The psalmist sang this from the recesses of his heart because of the marvelous deeds that the Lord has made… let us rejoice and be glad.
This year the young people of the Philippines one with the psalmist in singing… Ito ang araw(this is the day)… yet the youth extends not just a day… but a long-year of celebration. Celebrate Youth! Celebrate youth ministry!
What makes this celebration ever more meaningful it’s because the ECY-CBCP declares this. Indeed, the grandfathers (lolos) love their grandchildren (apos) in faith.
St. Paul in his letter to the Corinthians (15:13-14) advices the young people… “Stand firm in the faith… Do all your work in love”. This served also as guiding theme of this year’s occasion. That’s why the theme song of this celebration is entitled… Make a stand… We can stand and make a stand, heart to heart. Hand in hand. We can never too young to come as one and to make a stand.
We also hear the message of Pope Benedict XVI (who continues the work of Pope John Paul II in bringing the young people to Jesus) to the youth of the world on the occasion of the 26th WYD… “Dear young people the Church depends on you! She needs your lively faith, your creative charity and the energy of your hope, your presence renews, rejuvenates and gives new energy to the church.”

With you, young people, as youth ministers, we are one in praying to God…
Almighty Father, God of life and love… bless us
Your young people, with your grace. Give us the

Retreat for Youth Ministers with ECY Bishops
Retreat for Youth Ministers with ECY Bishops in MSPC Regions
In between February to May 2011, there will be retreats for youth ministers with the Episcopal Commission on Youth (ECY) in different regions through out the nation.
The Objectives of the retreat are as follows; (For the ECY Bishops of every region) to dialogue with the youth ministers and to embark on a spiritual journey together; to deepen the relationship between the ECY Bishops and the youth ministers; and to intensify the commitment of youth ministers in serving the young in their respective dioceses/organizations.
The ECY Bishops as retreat masters will be assisted by competent group of facilitators with the Regional Youth Directors as the leaders.
The three-day retreat will include liturgies, small and big group sharing sessions, synthesis, inputs, workshops and presentations.
The regions are requested to submit the 3 preferable dates and the venue for the retreat to the NSYA Office to facilitate the availability of the ECY Bishops.
There will be around 50 youth ministers expected to attend the said retreat in the respective regions.

WORLD YOUTH DAY in SPAIN
25th World Youth Day to be held in Spain
Theme, “ Planted and built up in Christ, firm in faith”. (Col. 2:7)
The World Youth Day (WYD) is one of the greatest concrete expressions of the Church’s love and confidence in young people. Instituted by the late John Paul II, the “pope of the young”, after the International Youth Year of the United Nations last 1985, the WYD continues on in an annual journey of faith-reflection and largely characterized by faith deepening and celebration, and spiritual and cultural exchange. Schedule of Activities:
Mon Aug 15: Upon arrival in Madrid, a panoramic tour of the classical and modern squares of the city will take place to the WYD accommodations.
Tue Aug 16: Collection of accreditation and backpacks with the remainder of the day free to explore the city. About 5:30 pm, Opening Liturgy in Madrid´s Cibeles Square, presided over by the archbishop of Madrid and concelebrated by the bishops and priests participating in WYD. About 9:00 pm, the first activities will be the following: Youth Festival—WYD Cultural Program begins, which include concerts ,exhibitions, displays, guided visits to Museums, plays, etc.
Wed Aug 17: Catechesis organized by linguistic groups, with bishops from all over
the world. These sessions will take place in churches, schools, auditoriums and sports centers of Madrid.
Thu Aug 18: Catechesis during the day. About 5:00 pm, welcome of the Holy Father in Cibeles Square. WYD Cultural Program in the evening around 9:00 pm.
Fri Aug 19: Catechesis during the day. Youth Festival—WYD Cultural Program at 5:00 pm. At about 9:00 pm, WYD Via Crucis. Fourteen "pasos" of the Spanish Holy Week, from different points of the peninsula, go out in procession through the streets of Madrid around Cibeles Square.
Sat Aug 20: Preparatory ceremony in Cuatro Vientos 4:00 pm: Pilgrims arrive, little by little, at the Four Winds aerodrome and take their places. Meanwhile, different activities take place on the stage (testimonies of young people, musical interpretations, prayers to the Virgin, etc.), to prepare for the Vigil. At about 8:00 pm, the Pope will arrive and Eucharistic adoration will begin. We will then spend the night at the Cuatro Vientos aerodrome. For those who so wish, there will be several tents for adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament.
Sun Aug 21: In the morning, the Pope will concelebrate Mass with thousands of bishops and priests and he will address young people to send them out to the world to witness to their faith, as the Lord did with his Apostles. At the end of the conclusive Mass, the Holy Father will announce the place where the next World Youth Day will be held. The remainder of the day will be at leisure for pursuits on the individual delegates.

BIBLICAL INSPIRATION:
I would like to share with you a biblical text and inspirational thoughts that has inspired me to continue my journey with the young people with strong faith, hope, and love. It comes from 1 Corinthians 3:9 " For we are partners working together for God, and you are God’s field."
As I reflect on that biblical text, I find it as a big challenge to do the tasks that has been entrusted to me in the youth ministry. I believe that working together with fellow youth ministers is a big help to sustain my passion for the youth ministry with strong faith to overcome difficulties and weaknesses along the way. Although serving the young takes a lot of sacrifices, I still have that confidence to pursue my goal as youth minister in bringing the youth and youth leaders to Christ. The youth of today are hunger for God’s word. I need to let them feel that they are special and important part of the church. My challenge is to be open to new approaches and strategies to become effective channel for the youth to get actively involved in the basic ecclesial communities (GKKs)as well as in their own parish settings.
I am very much inspired to do whatever my tasks in the youth ministry knowing the fact that God is in the midst of us as our partner in the mission of bringing together all young people to be disciples of Christ in the modern times.

“ Year of the youth would give challenges to the young people to be firm in their faith as they do their work as agents of evangelization and social transformation” .
We have always heard young people say that they are leaving the workplace of their “ secular” work because they will go into “ full-time young Christians service ” . What do think this statement means?
Does it mean that being in a “ secular “ job makes me a “ half-time Christian and what it is to be nobler to be in the “ sacred ” vocation considered “ full time ”? Well, we do understand that what they are saying is that they will now change their vocation and be doing for the church in bringing Christ’s Gospel with no other considerations.
We are all in full-time young Christians in service. Anywhere God has planted you is where you should grow and take root so that, like the proverbial mustard seed that grows to be the largest plant, birds can rest on your branches. Furthermore, the essence of the human body as wonderfully illustrated in Romans 12:4-8, underscores the need for both the “ secular ” and the “ sacred ” in kingdom building.
In God’s eyes, there is no secular or sacred, after all. What He sees is what is offered to Him in truth, love and honor. This is why God is honored with the repentant prayer of the publican over the self-righteous prayer of the Pharisees (Lk 18:9-14), or the offering of the poor widow who gave all out of her poverty as compared to the rich who gave a part out of their wealth (Lk 21:1-4).
God sees the heart. Even an eloquent preacher can grieve and dishonor God if he preaches in pride. Conversely, the honesty of Christian convictions puts a smile on God’s face.
My young people, you are God’s children in and out of the four walls of the Church. Have faith in Him- showing kindness and extending love to everyone, being honest in your dealings, sharing God’s message on every occasion, living the truth, and being the child of God He wants you to be anywhere you may be.
This is the true worship of a full-time young Christians.

Pilgrimage of the National Youth Day Cross
PILGRIMAGE OF THE NATIONAL YOUTH DAY CROSS
In preparation for the celebration of the CBCP Year of the Youth, there will be a nationwide pilgrimage of the National Youth Day Cross.
It aimed at focusing on the importance of young people in the life of the Church and society, sending out messages of hope to the youth, manifesting salvific love of Christ who offered his life to bring us back to the Father and encountering Christ in a more personal way. Thus, the pilgrimage of the Cross becomes a pilgrimage of prayer, reflection and grace.

In preparation for the celebration of the CBCP Year of the Youth, there will be a nationwide pilgrimage of the National Youth Day Cross.
It aimed at focusing on the importance of young people in the life of the Church and society, sending out messages of hope to the youth, manifesting salvific love of Christ who offered his life to bring us back to the Father and encountering Christ in a more personal way. Thus, the pilgrimage of the Cross becomes a pilgrimage of prayer, reflection and grace.

Prayer for the 2011 Year of the Youth
Prayer of the Youth on the occasion of the CBCP Year of the Youth
Almighty Father, God of life and love,
Through the time and ages, you love us.
You trust and chose us
to participate in your saving work.
Bless us, your young people, with your grace.
Give us the gift of living life to the full
by encountering Your Son in a personal way
and sustaining a relationship with him,
by learning what life truly is from his words and works,
from his filial relationship with you,
and by living in true and fruitful communion
with you and with one another.
Empower us through the Holy Spirit
to stand firm in faith.
May we bring our fellow young people closer to you
so that together, we become agents of change
and builders of a society of justice and solidarity,
love and peace.
Enable all of us: your young people,
together with those ministering to us
in the Church, in families and in society,
to make a decisive response to our universal vocation:
to live fully and fruitfully by doing everything in love
as we follow Jesus Christ along the path
of genuine trust in you.
In communion with the rest of the Church,
We pray that this CBCP Year of the Youth
become a kairos time
for the youth ministry of the Church
and a new springtime for us, Filipino youth:
a special period of growing in your grace
through our living in youthful holiness
and through our effort to reach out as a Church
to those waiting for your love

2011 CBCP Year of the Youth
CBCP Year of the Youth
The Catholic Bishops’ conference of the Philippines (CBCP) formally launched the start of the “ CBCP Year of the Youth ” last December 16,2010. It will conclude on the same date this year with the theme, “ Stand firm in faith…Do all your work in love” (1 Cor 16:13:14).
Ushering the new year as CBCP Year of the Youth is a double celebration for the Philippine church since it goes along with the 25th Founding Anniversary of the Episcopal Commission on Youth (ECY) in July 2011.
Bishop Joel Baylon, CBCP-ECY Chairman quoted, “ Let us work together to intensify awareness about the youth and their importance to the life and activity of the church. By our witness, let us help the young in our midst- in our homes, schools, communities, etc.- to find God in their lives and generously answer His call to service and love”. He further added, “Let us pray that there may be wider participation and greater dedication in youth ministry, leading to a meaningful and fruitful service that is undertaken with the fullest attention and highest priority in every way by all in the church”.
After the observance of the National Youth Day 2010 in the diocesan level, the year long-nation wide Pilgrimage of the National Youth Day Cross followed.
The CBCP Workshop on Youth Ministry was done last January 2011 during the Plenary Council while youth ministers had their retreats with ECY Bishops last February.
On April 2011, a National Youth Coordinating Council Meeting will be held with the Recognition of Outstanding Persons in the Youth Ministry.
By August 2011, the 26th World Youth Day will be held in Madrid, Spain after which the ECY will spearhead the National Youth Day celebration.
A Book on the Youth Ministry with success stories will be launched in November before the CBCP Year of the Youth will conclude in December 2011.
Finally, the youth ministry awareness campaign for the CBCP Year of the Youth will extend until 2012 with Congress of Youth Directors in January 2012 and National Conference for Youth Ministers in October 2012.

Believe. Live. Love.

“Stand firm in faith…Do all your work in love.” 1 Cor. 16:13-14.
Less than a year ago, the Silver Jubilee of MSPC-Youth was celebrated with full of enthusiasm, joy and hope. True to their nature, the energy of the young believers had been so relentless during the occasion that any foreseen and unforeseen challenges were taken with optimism. The great celebration of MSPC-Youth was over, yet the journey never ceases. Voyaging with the Church, it continues to sail bringing along its mission to shepherd the youth with Jesus Christ as the assuring Captain of the Ship.
Fortifying its journey, this year a remarkable event took place in the annals of the MSPC-Youth. The RYCC Conference took its course last February 2011, yielding a 3 Year MSPC-Youth Pastoral Plan. It was indeed a noble endeavor from among the Mindanao-Sulu youth leaders and ministers, sharing their experiences and ideas by unselfishly forging Catholic Youth Ministry Guidelines for all the ecclesiastical territories. God’s instrumentality for the youth converged for 3 days and went out of their way by passing through a process-oriented planning by “looking back, looking inside and looking forward”.
The 3 Year MSPC-Youth Pastoral Plan brings in a sense of direction to the young faithful as they continue to journey, facing various influences from their families, communities, societies and the world in general. The Facebook phenomenon has been narrowing the borders of the world keeping the humanity closer to one another. The series of mass uprising staged by Arab countries from Egypt, Libya and the recent Bahrain crisis badly affected the OFWs, confronting the issues of joblessness and eventually hopelessness. The affluent and peaceful Japan had become a woeful one as devastated by the mighty earthquake and the giant tsunami which cost thousand lives. Panic and anxiety, as the outcome of all these disconcerting situations, aggravated by rampant MMS hoax, have been inevitably threatening the faith of the youth.
This is basically the goal of the 3 Year MSPC-Youth Pastoral Plan which seeks to address the needs of the youth down to the grassroots level. It does not only provide proper information, but it also safeguards the faith of the youth from all forms of social, political and spiritual hazards coming from various sources. Part of the plan is keeping the youth leaders and ministers aware of the social and political issues which have bearing on their decisions as shepherds of the youth. As anyone can see, the MSPC-Youth is keeping in touch with the realities of the world. More importantly, it has prepared itself from all types of situation thru its so-called Plan as a way of pro-actively confronting the different challenges along the journey.
Gazing at the events of the world, one may say that life is difficult and uncertain. But, the Book of Inspiration tells us to stand firm in faith. Believe. It simply encourages us. Plans are valueless if remained undone. Thus, the call to act out the plans is the marching order for all the shepherds of the youth. Live. That is the way to carry on the works of Jesus for the youth even in the midst of the trying times. The Bible clearly directs all believers that faith without action is dead (James 2:17). Finally, that which transcends from all fears while doing the service of God for the youth is the important element that fires up the youth ministry. Love. Without it, every act of youth service will be meaningless and come to nothing.
Believe. Live. Love. It is the call of the times. It is the only way to sustain the ministry. And it is what the Captain of the voyage wants to embrace while sailing the waves of the wild seas and the turbulent oceans. Afraid of earthquake, tsunami and 2012? Then, believe, live and love!
